    Description

1841 HT#22 hard times token. This token was made following the economic  depression/panic in 1837. It was related to the projects for reforming the banking system put forward by Van Buren. The obverse shows a 3 masted ship, with "Constitution" on the side of the hull, and is sailing on smooth seas. The lettering around the border is "WEBSTER CREDIT-1841-CURRENCY". The reverse shows a ship that has wrecked on the rocks, and has "Experiment" on the side of the hull. The lettering around the border is "VAN BUREN METALLIC - 1837- CURRENCY". The Webster side shows a lot of red luster in the recesses of the lettering around the border, around the edges of the ship, and in the recesses of the ship details. The Van Buren side shows a little luster around some of the lettering on the lower half of the token. The other surface on both sides are a medium to dark brown.
