    Description

This auction is for an 1861-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar, variety W-14, which has two traits:  bisected date, and speared olive bud, also attributed as WB-103/104 respectively.  The photos provided here have arrows showing these characteristics.  These traits identify the coin as having been struck while the Confederacy had control of the New Orleans Mint.  A thorough explanation of all the different varieties of the 1861-O half dollar are explained in the 2013 book by Bill Bugert:   "A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume IV" which documents the half dollars struck at the New Orleans Branch Mint, from 1853-O (with arrows) to 1861-O.  It's fun and challenging trying to collect all the different 1861-O varieties when the U.S., State of Louisiana, and Confederacy were in control of this Mint, at different times!
This particular coin has been attributed by PCGS as the WB-103/104 variety described above, and graded as VF 35.  There are some small nicks on the obverse on Liberty's left (facing) arm, and neck area, and short dark streak between the 2nd and 3rd stars.  These are minor flaws mentioned for accuracy's sake, and were not enough to receive a qualifier by PCGS.  Nice, original, and attractive overall appearance.  Free shipping.  Please e-mail if you have any questions.
